Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology Sector of the Internal Medicine department treats diseases of the upper and lower digestive tract – oesophagitis, gastritis, ulcer, inflammation of the bile ducts, pancreas and chronic liver disease (hepatitis and cirrhosis).
The sector possesses a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Its work is in compliance with established world standards and the latest achievements in diagnostics and treatment.
Here they perform endoscopic diagnostic procedures of the digestive tract (gastroduodenoscopy, sigmoido- and colonoscopy) with biopsies for the diagnostics of benign and malign disease.
Routine endoscopic therapeutic interventions are performed such as polypectomy (removal of benign formations of the digestive tract), endoscopic ligation of hemorrhoids, endoscopic treatment of obesity with the placement of a balloon inside the stomach. The above-mentioned procedures are performed under intravenous anesthesia (unless contraindicated).
The Gastroenterology Sector has state-of-the-art ultrasonographic equipment for diagnostics of the liver, the bile ducts and the pancreas and with the possibility of performing punctures and drainages under ultrasonographic control.
They perform also endoscopic-X-ray diagnostics of the bile-hepatic-pancreatic pathology with opportunities for endoscopic treatment of disease such as cholelithiasis, inflammation disease, etc.
The sector’s patient turnover for 2007 was nearly 1000 people.
